There’s a hidden world behind the 31 shops run by Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care.  Two warehouses at St Austell and Redruth form the heart of the operation and they’re run with help from a dedicated army of volunteers.  To mark Volunteers Week (1st to 12th June) the charity is holding an Open Day at its St Austell base and everyone’s welcome to come and take a look.

Volunteers Week 2016 is actually running for nearly two weeks this year to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.  It’s an opportunity to salute all those who give their time to charity and make a huge difference. Cornwall Hospice Care will be celebrating the 1,000 volunteers who help across the charity and this will include an Open Day at the Holmbush based warehouse on Saturday 4th June. Becky Rust is the Volunteer Services Coordinator;

“Our warehouse at Holmbush, situated behind our furniture shop, is at the heart of our retail operation. Stock is sorted here and redistributed to shops across Cornwall and the warehouse is also home to our eBay, online books and new goods teams. Volunteers help in a wide variety of roles, including sorting donated items, restoring furniture, PAT testing of electrical equipment and heading out on the open road as van driver assistants. But we always need more help so this is a chance to have a peek behind the scenes and meet some of those who are already a part of our team.”

“Our shops are a vital source of income, bringing in more than 40% of the money we need to fund the care we provide.  Thanks to shoppers visiting our 31 stores we are able to give in and out patient support to people with a range of life limiting illnesses, so every shopper and every volunteer is helping to make a difference.”

The Open Day is on Saturday 4th June, with special tours and tea and biscuits. Booking is essential for the tours that will run at 10am, 11am and 1pm.  To book your place or to find out more about volunteering opportunities at Cornwall Hospice Care call Becky Rust on 01726 874063.
