Next March proud adopted Cornishman Trevor Price from St Austell will head for Everest Base Camp carrying a very special flag.  He’ll be amongst a party of trekkers raising money for Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care and he’ll be armed with a St Piran’s flag like no other.

Trevor’s wife Janet died of cancer at the charity’s Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in January of this year; “Janet fought so hard,” says Trevor, “and two weeks before Christmas she was admitted to the hospice where they were able to address her difficult symptoms so she could come home for the holiday period.  She then went back in to the hospice where the care and support provided for her at the end of her life was absolutely superb.  It’s all about the patient and their family and they did the best for her and for us.”

Trevor vowed then that he would do something to say thank you and he’s already walked from St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle to Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell with a group of friends who collectively raised a superb £2,400. Now he has set his sights even higher; “I wanted a focus and having always fancied taking on one of the challenges Cornwall Hospice Care promote, signed up for the Everest Trek next March. It means losing four stone in weight and getting back to fitness levels I last enjoyed around 30 years ago, I’ve worked off two and a half stone already, improving my fitness and raising more funds.”

Trevor has worked with a local flag company to design a Cornish flag on to which personal messages will be put by people donating a minimum amount of £10.  “The message can be up to 50 characters long and will be put on to the flag, which I will then carry it to Everest Base Camp.  On return from Everest, the flag will be placed in the Mount Edgcumbe Hospice as a long term memorial.  I worked out it must have cost Cornwall Hospice Care around £10,000 for the time Janet was in Mount Edgcumbe so that’s my overall target.  We’re due to arrive at the camp on what would have been our 40th wedding anniversary so what an occasion to unfurl this very special flag and fly it with pride!”

Trevor will be selling spaces on the flag at Asda, St Austell on Saturday 12th November and has set up a special fundraising page at https://give.everydayhero.com/uk/memorial-flag
