Pat Treweek and her daughter, Nicola Chapman have supported Cornwall Hospice Care, for many years. Following the death of David – Pat’s husband and Nicola’s Dad, in the summer, they have even more of a personal reason to continue their support. They are the latest people to tell their story to help others understand the importance of the Cornish charity to patients over the age of 18 and their families.

Pat and Nicola are familiar faces in Perranporth - Nicola works at the Post Office and Pat is a volunteer at the Cornwall Hospice Care shop. Pat started volunteering 18 years ago at the charity’s Truro shop. Over the years, she has taken on many roles such as ironing, sorting and pricing clothes that have been donated to the shop. Pat explains;

“I enjoy it so much. Since David’s been gone, it’s a different feeling when I am working. I knew what I was working for before, but now, it’s more special than ever.”

Nicola has been supporting Cornwall Hospice Care for a number of years in a different way. Following in her Dad’s footsteps, who was a fundraiser for St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, Nicola undertook a sponsored bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats. With support from the local community and businesses, Nicola raised hundreds of pounds. A collection at David’s funeral also raised £1,300 to be donated to the charity.

David was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in 2003, when at the age of 75, he was still very fit and healthy. Following courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, David was referred to St Julia’s Hospice in the summer. Pat recalled;

“They took the worries away. I shall never forget that kindness because it helped us such a lot.”

Nicola added;

“The nurses, or Angels as I prefer to call them, worked quietly and attended to Dad whilst we were there. I loved the way they still chatted away to him and told him what they were going to do, as if he was wide awake. We were looked after and cared for by the nurses and carers. Nothing was too much trouble.”
