Not so in Penryn where leading Cornish charity, Cornwall Hospice Care has officially opened a new and eye catching retro chic warehouse. The stock is extensive from furniture to nursery items, cushions, sewing machines and buttons.

The new Retro Chic Warehouse was formally opened by the Town Mayor of Penryn, Councillor Gillian Grant on Friday 15 August. As Lindsay Taylor, Business Manager at Cornwall Hospice Care explains, the outlet has actually been trading very successfully already;

“We first opened in June to sell off a huge donation of bathroom and shower fittings very kindly donated to us by Teddington’s in Holmbush at St Austell. We raised over £2,000 and we were then able to use that money to help purchase the fixtures and fittings needed to get the Retro Chic Warehouse ready for opening. We then opened the doors on this new venture in mid-July to coincide with the Penryn Arts Festival where we were able to talk to local people with creative talent who we hope will join our team to help with the up-cycling theme of the store.”

“The idea for up-cycling started more than a year ago when I attended a workshop to learn the techniques of using chalk paint to re-vamp old, tired furniture. As a charity we hadn’t had an outlet where we could sell this type of furniture but now we have secured the Penryn site we can work on bringing together a team of volunteers to help run the Warehouse. The store has a great feel to it and we hope to appeal to new customers, including those looking for nursery items.”

Daisy Jones is the Manager of Cornwall Hospice Care’s new Retro Chic Warehouse;

“The Mayor will actually be opening the second phase of the store, the sewing room. This is a couple of rooms where we have set up sewing machines for the volunteers to use to make cushions and bunting using remnants of material and redundant clothing. We’ll also be selling lots of associated items like knitting needles and buttons. It’s all very exciting and a totally new venture for our charity so we hope to see lots of people pay us a visit. The Retro Chic Warehouse is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. We use the rest of the week to prepare items for sale.”
