It’s been more than a year since Cornwall Hospice Care was part of the retail community in Newquay. Today that all changes as the healthcare charity opens its new store in Bank Street. Offering the largest charity shop chain in Cornwall, Cornwall Hospice Care relies heavily on income from its stores to fund the care provided at its two Cornish hospices.
“Our shops have been closed for seven of the last twelve months,” explains Frazer Hopkins who’s Head of Retail at the charity. “That represents a huge loss of income and though our hospices at Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle, have remained open 24/7 we really need to start trading with determination.”
Yesterday Cornwall Hospice Care shops opened their doors in line with government guidance, but ironically a technical fault halted the plan in Newquay. Frazer again; “Technology can be a fickle friend and when our Manager, Rob Bosisto went in first thing he discovered the till had suffered a catastrophic failure over the weekend. It means our shiny new shop now opens today (Tuesday 13th April) and I wish the team the very best of luck.”

The store offers pre-loved clothing, books, bric-a-brac, games and toys in a spacious store where customers can shop safely and at a distance to others. As well as customers, the shop team are also appealing for volunteers to help out. The Shop Manager Rob Bosisto; “Volunteers are vital to us, giving their time reduces costs and that means more of our income can go straight to supporting the work of our colleagues at our hospices and community services. It’s a great way of meeting people, having fun, learning new skills and making a difference. You can do as many or as few hours as suits you, but I warn you, shop life is addictive and once you get involved you’ll love every minute.”
To apply to volunteer, you can call 01726 65711 or go online at Volunteering Application Form | Cornwall Hospice Care
The Newquay shop will be open Monday to Saturday each week, from 10am to 4pm.
