St Austell Brewery’s Charitable Trust have presented Cornish charity, Cornwall Hospice Care with £10,000 towards the refurbishment of two bedrooms at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. The money will help fund the updating of the rooms and their two en-suite bathrooms, and the modernisation of disabled toilets within the hospice.

St Julia’s is one of two adult hospices run by the charity and opened in 1999, with further extensions added in 2011. The phased refurbishment is aimed at ensuring they comply with stringent infection control standards and will also make sure they are fit for purpose well in to the future. Debbie Henshaw is the charity’s Legacies, Trusts and Grants Officer;

“As a 24/7 charity providing intensive care for people will terminal illnesses we need to maintain the highest standards in all areas, including the surroundings in which patients stay. We’ve taken a phased approach to the refurbishment at St Julia’s Hospice, updating two rooms at a time. This very kind donation from the St Austell Brewery’s Charitable Trust will allow us to move forward with phase 2 and for that we are extremely grateful.”

Micci Cooper is the Administrator of the Brewery’s Charitable Trust;

“Nobody ever wants to experience the care offered by Cornwall Hospice Care, but we all realise we need the two adult hospices in the county. In fact it’s good to know they’re here and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and at no charge to those who need the support offered. It’s also rewarding to know that this gift will make a difference to a lot of people in the future.”

Debbie Henshaw again, “we hope the work will begin in late summer and will be completed in up to 10 weeks. Fortunately we have spare capacity so we can update the two rooms while still keeping all eight of the intensive care beds at St Julia’s Hospice open.”

About Cornwall Hospice Care:

Cornwall Hospice Care is a 24/7 Cornish charity that provides specialist care for people with terminal illnesses. Our nursing teams support patients and their families at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle and in Cornwall’s hospitals, care homes and where necessary, in the community. The charity also runs a 24 hour advice line for other healthcare professionals. It costs over £5 million to provide the specialist care we offer to our in and out patients. Only 20% of this is funded through a contribution from Cornwall’s NHS Commissioners. The other £4million is raised via the support of people in Cornwall who leave us legacies, support fundraising events, play our lottery and visit our 31 shops.
