As part of the national Volunteers Week campaign (1st to 8th June), Cornwall Hospice Care are celebrating the many who give their time to the Cornish charity. Around a thousand people volunteer in a wide range of roles at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices, in the shops, offices and at fundraising events.

The charity is celebrating the commitment of its volunteers by featuring a series of short films made with just some of those who donate their time. Also involved are the staff members who support them, all of whom reinforce the fact that the charity simply couldn’t achieve all it does without voluntary help.

Elaine volunteers in Cornwall Hospice Care’s lottery department at Holmbush in St Austell, “I wanted to give something back, making a small contribution to the wonderful work that the hospices do.” Her manager is Sarah Vincent, “Elaine does marvellous work for us in the lottery team. We couldn’t do what we do without her.”

Jane volunteers on the ward at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, “I have a nursing background so felt I would be able to come in to the hospice and offer help and support to the staff, patients and relatives. Volunteering makes me feel elated and I would urge anyone to try it.” Lizzie Hotton is the Ward Sister, “Our ward volunteers undertake a variety of roles and bring a cheerful smile. We really value everything they do and would be lost without them.”

During the week Cornwall Hospice Care will also be featuring short films with volunteers who fundraise, support the van drivers, help in one of the charity’s community shops and on the reception at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle.

About Cornwall Hospice Care:

Cornwall Hospice Care is a 24/7 Cornish charity that provides specialist care for people with terminal illnesses. Our nursing teams support patients and their families at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle and in Cornwall’s hospitals, care homes and where necessary, in the community. The charity also runs a 24 hour advice line for other healthcare professionals. It costs over £5 million to provide the specialist care we offer to our in and out patients. Only 20% of this is funded through a contribution from Cornwall’s NHS Commissioners. The other £4million is raised via the support of people in Cornwall who leave us legacies, support fundraising events, play our lottery and visit our 31 shops.
