A ‘Day in the Life’ at Truro Homestyle, by Megan our Marketing and Promotions Officer.
On Wednesday 25th April it was my turn to take part in a ‘Day in the Life’ shop visit. This time I was off to our Truro Homestyle Shop and I was very much looking forward to it! Having been at the shop back in March to photograph our new garden range I knew the team at Truro are fun to work with.
I was greeted by shop manager Terry, who after telling me where the fire exits and first aid kits were, gave me the most useful bit of information for working at the shop “you must always offer everyone a hot drink when making one for yourself”.
After my last shop visit to St Austell Homestyle I felt comfortable to work at the till point for the day. I even remembered my 4 digit login number for Cybertill. And it wasn’t long before customers were asking questions I couldn’t answer! But with the support of Kayla, Sales Assistant the customers got what they were looking for.
The till ebbed and flowed so I was able to sort through boxes of donated bric a brac behind the till point whilst greeting customers into the shop. I was also eyeing up all the garden furniture and outdoor dining sets that were on display in front of me and wondering if I could convince my other half that we need it all for the garden.
I had quick visit to the warehouse where furniture stock is kept, with spare shop display units and mannequins – some severely injured! On my lunch break I chatted with Tristan – Tristan works on on our vans and also does PAT testing. It turns out Tristan started his Cornwall Hospice Care journey as a volunteer and we both went to the same secondary school!
Before I leave Terry prints out a report from the till and I took £324.50! I told Terry it had been another eye opening day in retail and he asked that my write up had ‘no cliches’. So as I’m sat writing up about my day I am thinking what’s wrong with a cliché? A quick search in the online Oxford Dictionary and it’s obvious.
I don’t want to use unoriginal, predictable or overused clichés to describe a team of people who give their all, facing all sorts of challenges to make sure every customer is happy and, in turn, do their part to help fund our specialist care (but they do give 110%)!
I’m looking forward to returning to the shop!
