Success at the Holyer an Gof Publisher's Awards......
At the beginning of 2018 we were contacted by a member of the Gorsedh Kernow about The Great Cornish Cake Bake Cake Book, masterminded by our own Judy Lawton, one of our Community Fundraising team, as a spin off from her Great Cornish Cake Bake Day event each year. The Gorsedh Kernow suggested that we submit the book for consideration at their Holyer an Gof Publisher’s Awards for 2018.
The annual Gorsedh Kernow Holyer an Gof Awards were instigated in 1996, named in memory of Redruth publisher and Cornish Bard Leonard Truran, whose Bardic name was Holyer an Gof – Follower of The Smith. The scheme aims to promote books about Cornwall, set in Cornwall or in Cornish. Each year over 80 books are submitted by publishers from Cornwall and beyond and these are read and evaluated by members of a panel of Readers.
And so it was that Sarah Britton from our Fundraising Team (who had helped Judy to put the book together) and Jan Pallett our Digital Media Officer found themselves at the Royal Cornwall Museum on Wednesday 11th July for the Holyer an Gof Awards ceremony, whilst Judy was away on annual leave in foreign climes.
Jan told us; “Judy’s book was nominated in final class of the evening, so it was a tense wait. It was great to hear how the books are reviewed and what the readers liked about all the nominated books. Sarah and I were absolutely gob-smacked when the Cake Bake Book was called out as the class winner! I knew Judy would be on tenterhooks waiting to hear, so as soon we could we spoke with her on the phone – to say she was thrilled was an understatement! It’s a huge accolade for Judy and I’m delighted for her and our fabulous Cornish Charity.”
If you don’t have a copy of the book yet, you can buy it for £6.99 in any of our shops, hospice receptions or from the Fundraising Office at Daniels Lane.
