The thought of having to visit or stay in a hospice can be a scary one if you’ve never visited before. As part of this year’s Hospice Care Week, Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care is launching two new videos that allow you to take a look in both of their hospices without leaving home. The films take the viewer on a walk round Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle.

“It can be a bit of a shock when someone mentions a stay in a hospice” says Gina Starnes, Director of Clinical Services at Cornwall Hospice Care. “We’re very proud of our environment and we want people to be able to take a look at it in their own time and from where they’re comfortable. The video tours are available via our website and show just how light and airy our hospices are and I’d really like to emphasise how friendly and welcoming our teams of staff and volunteers are.”

The videos have been produced by members of the charity’s staff and show the bedrooms, treatment areas, kitchens, corridors and even the bathroom at Mount Edgcumbe where patients can indulge in a hot-tub style bath full of bubbles. Gina Starnes again; “The videos can be watched by the whole family and friends and I hope they’ll give potential patients a better idea of what a hospice is really like. There are so many myths about hospices and this is one way of proving how beautiful and modern our buildings are, with stunning grounds around Mount Edgcumbe and a beautiful courtyard at St Julia’s.”

Hospice Care Week is an annual event aimed at recognising and celebrating hospice care nationwide. It’s an opportunity to show the world the value of support, of care and of what matters to us as individuals at the end of life when we need it most.  The week runs from 4 – 8 October 2021.

On Wednesday of this week (6th October) Cornwall Hospice Care will be honouring a group of volunteers who’ve each given the charity more than 40 years of support. On Friday (8th October) the value of the Cornwall Hospice Care shops will be highlighted as money raised from the donated goods they sell, helps fund the care the charity provides to patients free of charge.
