Oll an Gwella: From the Heart of Cornwall
“Songs, shanties and smiles from this kernow-loving ‘boy’ band from Newquay.”
All members of Newquay male Voice Choir, Oll an Gwella (All the Best in Kernewek) is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning, rehearsed, a cappella male chorus who sing for charities. Their popularity and reputation is founded on their infectious humour and distinctive 4-part harmony.
The group have sung on elaborate sound stages at the Lorient Festival Interceltique and Boardmasters Music Festival, as well as on the deck of the Cutty Sark and at Salisbury Cathedral, but they are equally at home performing in local festivals and care establishments. They have broadcast live on BBC Radio and TV and have been recorded by ZDF for German Television, singing in Kernewek (Cornish). They enjoy performing at family celebrations, especially weddings, and feel very much at home when working with young singers in Newquay schools.
‘From the Heart of Cornwall’ is their third CD, recorded earlier this year, just before lockdown. The 15 Songs featured include Cornish favourites ‘Cornwall my Home’, ‘Camborne Hill’, ‘Lamorna’, ‘Cornish Farewell Shanty’, ‘Trelawny’ and ‘The White Rose’ along with a couple of songs that have delighted Welsh audiences on their visits to South Wales ‘Calon Lan’ and ‘Eli Jenkins Prayer’. The rest of the songs on the album represent the sea shanty and mining influences of their homeland, along with songs confirming their Male Voice Choir background. In fact the CD is pretty representative of a live Oll an Gwella performance.
Thanks to the generous support of sponsors, both Newquay Lions Clubs, St Columb Rotary Club, Premier Pasties, Electrical Services and Wind Power Generation, St Dennis, all funds generated from sales can go directly to the two beneficiary charities, Cornwall Hospice Care and Cornwall Blood Bikes.
