Cornwall Hospice Care Verification of Death

Verification of Death for Registered Nurses working in Care Homes, and other community settings requiring deaths to be verified. It is an evidence-based, clinical course to deliver the knowledge and competencies necessary to legally verify death.

Essential Requirements:
Participants must be Registered Nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The organisation they work for must have an agreed policy for the Verification of Death by Registered Nurses which is in line with their local NHS policy.

The course will provide a safe framework to enable registered competent nursing staff to verify adult death. Expected outcomes are that:

• The death of the patient is dealt with in accordance with the Law
• The death of the patient is dealt with in a timely, sensitive and caring manner, respecting the dignity of the patient, relatives and carers
• There is a reduction of delays in dealing with the deceased
• There is appropriate use of registered nursing skills and competencies

This training session counts as 3 hours towards Continuing Professional Development required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. A certificate will be awarded on successful completion of the theoretical and simulated assessments.
