Welcoming Young Volunteers

Are you looking for work experience or doing your Duke of Edinburgh Award?  Do you want a challenge whilst supporting your local charity?

Come and join our team!

We have several young people under the age of 18 who volunteer for us already, helping to raise awareness and champion our work providing care for people living with a terminal illness.

What will you be doing?

Volunteering with Cornwall Hospice Care is fun!  As a young volunteer you may become a Retail Assistant in one of our Shops, a Meeter and Greeter in a Donation Centre or be part of a gardening project at one of our hospices.  This means you could be merchandising clothing, creating window displays, talking to our customers or finding treasure from our donations!

Occasionally you might get the opportunity to help out at our events, marshalling or manning a stand or supporting one of our other departments or within the hospice itself.

What will you gain?

We believe volunteering experience can really help when it comes to applying for jobs, apprenticeships or higher education and we want to be part of a young person’s future as they will be part of ours.  You can:

  • Learn and develop new skills such as stock control, merchandising and teamwork
  • Increase your self-confidence and build self-esteem, we let your qualities shine and will support you in your abilities
  • Develop a range of personal, social and communication skills which will improve your relationships and ensure that you are able to manage interactions with businesses and organisations
  • Understand about Customer Service; employers place great importance on customer-related work experience as it is a necessary skill in a wide range of occupations
  • Have an awareness of Health and Safety in the workplace, by understanding what is a hazard, how to report incidents and the importance of keeping yourself and others safe
  • Training in the role, learning how to carry out your duties and what your responsibilities will be
  • Meet people and make friends
  • Have fun!

You will also have the opportunity to receive one of our YV awards as we recognise Young Volunteers who have achieved 25 hours, 50, 75 and 100 hours.

What's next?

You can apply online, ask for an application form from one of our stores, or from our Volunteer Services Team.  We also need a completed consent form signed by a parent or guardian if you are under 18, and we ask for a referee on our application.

You’ll be invited to attend a taster session, which is a great time to see if this is the best role for you; you’ll get hands on experience of the tasks involved and meet the Manager and some of the other wonderful team of volunteers.  You’ll learn more about the operations of the shop or department you’re in, and what to expect on a ‘normal’ day.

You’ll also be provided with information about the training and support available to you and how our shops support local communities and are an important part of helping to raise the funds needed to run our hospices.

We look forward to welcoming you to the team!
